Soft Egg Congee: 27g of Protein in One Warm Bowl

Published November 5, 2026. General information, not medical advice.

Congee is rice cooked until it is creamy and soft. It has a long history as a food for days when you want something gentle, and it is a good base for protein because the egg cooks right into it.

This version uses leftover cooked rice, so it takes about fifteen minutes, and most of that is simmering.

What you need

  • 1/2 cup cooked rice
  • 3/4 cup broth
  • 2 eggs
  • 2 tbsp shredded cooked chicken

How to make it

  1. Simmer the rice and broth for about 8 minutes until creamy.
  2. Stir in the egg and the chicken and cook for about 2 minutes.

The numbers

About 27g of protein and about 370 calories for the whole bowl. Values are approximate.

On a queasy day

Leave out the chicken and cook the egg until it is very soft. Serve it warm, in a small bowl.

Storing it

It keeps in the fridge for about 2 days. Add a splash of broth when you reheat it, because the rice thickens as it sits.
